Mentre una parte della squadra è ancora impegnata al Tour de PEI in Canada, cinque ragazze della Selle Italia-Ghezzi sono in Spagna, nei Paesi Baschi, per disputare la corsa a tappe di categoria 2.1 Iurreta-Emakumeen Bira. A guidare la squadra sarà Fabiana Luperini che ieri è giunta ottava nella Durango-Durango, corsa in linea che è un tradizionale antipasto proprio della corsa a tappe basca: insieme a lei ci saranno anche Kaytee Boyd, Lorena Foresi, Oxana Kozonchuk e Sabrina Zogli.
L'Emakumeen Bira, come tutte le corse che si disputano nei Paesi Baschi, è caraterizzata da un percorso molto impegnato e ricco di salite tanto che ha spesso esaltato le doti di scalatrice di Fabiana Luperini: la campionessa italiana si è infatti imposta nella classifica generale nel 2006 mentre nel 2004 ha chiuso al terzo posto. Il direttore sportivo che seguirà la squadra in questa occasione, Fortunato Lacquaniti, è molto fiducioso in vista della corsa: «Fabiana viene da un periodo di allenamenti abbastanza intensi ma ieri nella corsa in linea è subito andata abbastanza bene, stando con le migliori in salita e patendo solamente un poco gli ultimi 10 km in discesa in cui ha preferito non rischiare più del dovuto. All'Emakumeen Bira in gara ci saranno tutte le migliori o quasi, quindi sarà un ottimo test per la condizione». Domani si inizierà con la Iurreta-Iurreta mentre l'ultima tappa della corsa basca sarà domenica 14 a Orduña.
Al Tour de PEI, invece, Martine Bras dopo il quinto posto nella prima tappa centra un buon terzo posto nella terza frazione confermando così il suo buono stato di forma: a due tappe dalla conclusione la meglio messa in classifica (determinata esclusivamente dalla spettacolare ma ventosa cronometro del secondo giorno) è Luisa Tamanini, undicesima, che tra oggi e domani proverà a recuperare più posizioni possibili.

Emakumeen Bira will be next race for Selle Italia-Ghezzi

While a part of the team is still in Canada for the Tour de PEI, five girls of the Selle-Italia Ghezzi are in Spain, in the Basque Country, to contest in the stage race of 2.1 category Iurreta-Emakumeen Bira. Fabiana Luperini, who yesterday was eighth in the Durango-Durango, will be the leader of the team: with her there will be also Kaytee Boyd, Lorena Foresi, Oxana Kozonchuk and Sabrina Zogli.
The Emakumeen Bira, like all races that are disputed in the Basque country, is characterized by a route very hard and full of hills so that it often emphasized the climber skills of Fabiana Luperini: the italian champion wo the general classification in 2006 while in 2004 she was third. The sports director who will follow the team on this occasion, Fortunato Lacquaniti, is very confident for the race: "Fabiana had a period of pretty intense training but yesterday she went pretty well, she was with the best on the climb and she suffered only a little the last 10 km downhill in which she preferred not to risk more than necessary. All the best rider will start in the Emakumeen Bira so the race will be an excellent test for the condition». Tomorrow the race will begin with the Iurreta-Iurreta while the final stage of the basque race will be on sunday 14 in Orduña.
At the Tour de PEI, however, Martine Bras after a fifth place in the first stage takes a good third place in the third fraction confirming her good shape: it remains only two stages and the best Selle Italia-Ghezzi in the general classification (as determined almost only by the spectacular but windy time trial of the second day) is Luisa Tamanini, eleventh, and between today and tomorrow she will try to gain some positions.
